How to clean and maintain an e-bike: a step-by-step guide

E-bike schoonmaken en onderhouden: zo doe je dat

During every ride, an e-bike is exposed to dust, sand, mud, rain and dirt. Regular cleaning and maintenance not only keep your electric bike looking good, but also help its components last longer. By removing dirt in time and properly lubricating moving parts, your e-bike will continue to run smoothly and reliably.

But how do you safely clean an e-bike with all its electrical components? In this blog, we explain step by step how to clean and maintain your e-bike.

How often should you clean an e-bike?

How often you should clean your e-bike mainly depends on how frequently and under which conditions you ride. Do you use your bike every day for commuting? Then it is probably regularly exposed to rain, dirt and road salt. It is also wise not to wait too long before cleaning it after a ride through mud or heavy rain.

You do not need to carry out a full maintenance service after every ride. A quick clean when the bike is dirty and regular attention to the chain and drivetrain already make a big difference.

Can you clean an e-bike with water?

Yes. An e-bike can be cleaned safely with water, as long as you do it correctly.

Preferably use a garden hose with a gentle water jet, a bucket of water or CyclOn cleaning products suitable for cleaning your bike. Avoid spraying a powerful jet of water directly at electrical connections, bearings and seals.

It is better not to use a pressure washer. The high water pressure can force water past seals and into places where you do not want it.

Step 1: Prepare your e-bike for cleaning

Place the e-bike in a stable position and switch off the electrical system. Does your bike have a removable battery? Remove it before you start.

Immediately check whether the contact points and connections are clean and dry. This prevents dirt from building up around the electrical connections.

Step 2: Remove sand and loose dirt

Is there a lot of sand or dried mud on the bike? Carefully remove it first. Rinse off the worst of the dirt with a gentle water jet.

Do not immediately wipe a bike covered in sand with a cloth. Sand particles can act like sandpaper and cause small scratches.

Step 3: Clean the chain and drivetrain

The drivetrain deserves extra attention. A dirty chain attracts more and more dirt and can cause additional wear to the chain, cassette and chainrings.

Use CyclOn Bionet Chain Cleaner to remove dirt, oil and old lubricant residue from the drivetrain.

Apply Bionet to the chain, cassette and chainrings, and use a suitable brush to loosen the dirt. Then rinse the components thoroughly with water. We recommend the Precision Soft Detailer Brush, as it easily reaches difficult areas.

Step 4: Clean the frame

Now that the drivetrain is clean, you can continue with the rest of your e-bike. Apply CyclOn Bike Cleaner to the frame, wheels and other dirty components. Allow the cleaner to work briefly so the dirt comes off more easily.

Then use a soft Soft Washing Brush or Cleaning Glove to remove stubborn dirt. Pay extra attention to hard-to-reach areas around the motor, mudguards, bottom bracket and rear triangle.

Then rinse the bike with clean water.

Prefer cleaning with foam? Use CyclOn Foam Cleaner

Do you want to clean your e-bike quickly, or do you not have a garden hose to hand? Then CyclOn Foam Cleaner is a convenient option.

Foam Cleaner creates an active foam that spreads evenly across the surface and helps loosen dirt. This makes it ideal for quickly cleaning the frame and other surfaces of your e-bike.

Apply Foam Cleaner, allow the foam to work briefly and then wipe away the dirt with a clean cloth.

Step 5: Dry the e-bike thoroughly

After cleaning, it is important to dry the bike thoroughly. Use a CyclOn Microfiber Cleaning Cloth for this. The soft microfibre cloth easily absorbs moisture and any remaining dirt without damaging the surface.

Pay extra attention to areas where water can easily remain. Also check that the battery connections are completely dry before reinstalling the battery.

Step 6: Lubricate the chain or maintain the belt drive

After cleaning and degreasing, the chain must be lubricated again. Always apply the lubricant to a completely dry chain.

The most suitable lubricant depends on the conditions in which you ride:

  • Wax Lube: ideal if a clean drivetrain is important to you.
  • All Weather Lube: suitable for different weather conditions.
  • Wet Lube: suitable for wet and demanding conditions.
  • Dry Lube: suitable for dry conditions.

Apply the lubricant drop by drop to the chain links. Allow it to penetrate thoroughly and remove excess lubricant with a cloth. More lubricant is not better: excess lubricant attracts additional dirt.

Does your e-bike have a belt drive?

More and more e-bikes have a belt drive instead of a traditional chain. You do not need to lubricate a belt with regular chain oil.

Keep the belt clean by regularly removing sand, mud and other dirt. You can use CyclOn Belt Spray to maintain the belt drive. It helps the belt run smoothly and reduces the adhesion of dirt.

Step 7: Protect your e-bike

Would you like to make cleaning easier next time? After cleaning, treat the frame with CyclOn Bike Protector.

The protective layer helps prevent dirt from easily adhering to the surface and gives the bike a well-maintained appearance.

Does your bike have a matt finish? Then use CyclOn Matt Protector, specially developed for matt surfaces.

Do not forget the electrical components

An e-bike requires slightly different attention in several areas compared with a regular bicycle. The electrical connections are particularly important.

Regularly check the contact points, including those of the battery. Keep them clean and make sure no moisture or dirt remains.

For electrical connections, you can use CyclOn E-Bike Connection Spray. It has been specially developed for the electrical connections of e-bikes and helps protect contact points against moisture and corrosion.

Apply the product specifically to suitable electrical contact points and do not simply spray it over the entire motor or battery.

E-bike maintenance in brief

A good maintenance routine does not have to be complicated:

  1. Switch off the e-bike and remove the battery if possible.
  2. Carefully rinse sand and loose dirt from the bike.
  3. Degrease the chain and drivetrain with Bionet.
  4. Clean the frame with Bike Cleaner or Foam Cleaner.
  5. Dry the bike with a CyclOn Microfiber Cleaning Cloth.
  6. Lubricate the chain with the correct lubricant or maintain the belt drive with Belt Spray.
  7. Protect the frame with Bike Protector or Matt Protector.
  8. Check the electrical contact points and treat them with E-Bike Connection Spray if necessary.

With a few simple steps, you can keep your e-bike clean, running smoothly and ready for the next ride.
